How to upload public and private photos, how the free private album works (request-based, revocable, no watermarks), what moderation rules apply, and how to fix common photo issues.

Uploading public photos

You can add up to nine public photos to your profile. These are visible to everyone on the app. The first photo is your main profile image — the one shown on the grid and map — so make it count.

  1. Go to your Profile tab and tap the edit icon. Tap the photo grid, then tap + to add a photo from your camera roll or take one directly.

  2. Drag and drop to reorder photos. The first slot is your main image. Choose something clear and recent where your face is visible.

  3. After uploading, photos go through a brief automated moderation check. Most photos are approved within seconds; some may take a few minutes during busy periods. They are not visible to other users until approved.

  4. To delete a photo, long-press it in the editor and tap Remove.

Photo tips

Use recent photos that look like you now. Include at least one clear face shot — profiles without a face photo receive far fewer messages. Mix up your gallery: a selfie, a full-body photo, and one from an activity or place you love all work well together.

Private albums

Every Splashd user gets one free private album. Photos in your private album are completely hidden from the main grid and map — they're only visible to people you explicitly grant access to. You can add explicit photos to your private album; they cannot go in your public gallery.

  1. In the profile editor, scroll to Private album. Tap Add photos to add from your camera roll or take new ones.

  2. Other users can request access to your album by tapping the lock icon on your profile. You receive a notification and can approve or decline each request individually.

  3. To review pending and approved access requests, go to Profile → Private album → Manage access.

  4. To revoke access from someone, tap their name in Manage access and select Remove access. This takes effect immediately and silently.

No watermarks, ever

Splashd does not watermark private album photos. Unlike some competing apps, your private photos are delivered clean with no overlay. You control access, not us.

Photo moderation rules

Splashd uses a combination of automated AI screening (AWS Rekognition) and human review to keep the app safe. Here's what is and isn't allowed in each context:

  1. Public profile photos: No nudity, no explicit sexual content, no graphic violence, no content featuring minors. Photos must show the real person who owns the account — no stolen or heavily edited faces.

  2. Private album: Adult nudity is permitted. Explicit sexual content between consenting adults is permitted. Content featuring minors, non-consensual imagery, or illegal content is never permitted in any context.

  3. Chat photos: The same rules as private albums apply to photos sent in conversations. You can also send via View once (see Messaging & Connections).

  4. Photos flagged by the automated system go to our human moderation team. Moderation decisions can be appealed by emailing support@splashd.app with your username and the photo in question.

Human review

AI flags content; humans make the final call on any ambiguous case. We do not auto-remove content based solely on automated screening. Our moderation team is available 24/7.

Sharing photos in conversations

You can share photos directly in any conversation — from your camera roll, from your private album, or taken live. This is free and works for all users.

  1. Tap the photo icon in the chat toolbar to pick from your camera roll, or tap the camera icon to take a new photo.

  2. To share from your private album, tap the album icon in the toolbar and select the photo. The recipient can view it but it won't be added to their camera roll automatically.

  3. Toggle View once before sending if you want the photo to disappear after the recipient views it. View-once photos cannot be screenshotted.

Photo upload troubleshooting

Most upload issues are caused by a slow connection, an incompatible file type, or a permission denial. Here's how to fix the most common problems:

  1. Photo won't upload: Check your internet connection. Try switching from mobile data to Wi-Fi (or vice versa). Force-quit the app and try again. If it still fails, check that the file isn't a HEIC/HEIF photo over 20 MB — Splashd supports JPEG, PNG, and HEIF up to 20 MB.

  2. Photo stuck "pending": Moderation usually completes within a few seconds. If a photo has been pending for more than 30 minutes, delete it and re-upload. If the issue persists, contact support.

  3. Photo rejected: You'll receive an in-app notification explaining why. Common reasons: nudity in a public photo, text or watermarks overlaid on the image, or the photo doesn't appear to be of the account owner. Move it to your private album if nudity is the reason.

  4. Camera permission denied: If you can't take photos in the app, check that Splashd has camera access in your phone's Settings → Apps → Splashd → Permissions.
