01Why we built this
The old guardgot greedy.
Grindr and Scruff were once great. Then they went public, found shareholders, and discovered something powerful: gay men are sticky users. So they started paywalling basics. Travel mode: $24.99/mo. Who viewed you: paid. Unlimited messages: paid. The map: not even an option.
Meanwhile, they sold your data, tolerated harassment as a retention mechanic, and let moderation slide to a skeleton crew. The community became the inventory.
Splashd is the correction. Built by LGBTQ+ developers who got sick of writing monthly checks to apps that treat users as the product. Every feature that matters ships free. Data stays with you. Moderation is staffed, not outsourced to an algorithm and an FAQ.
