São PauloBrazil
Home of the largest Pride parade on earth, and a scene to match.
São Pauloat a glance.
São Paulo throws the largest Pride parade in the world, and the gay scene behind it runs just as big. The heart of it is Rua Frei Caneca, the street locals simply call Gay Caneca, near Avenida Paulista. The old downtown around Largo do Arouche keeps a historic gay quarter, vast clubs are scattered across the city, and every June several million people fill Avenida Paulista for the Parada do Orgulho.
What defines gay São Paulo is sheer scale. This is a city of twelve million that does nothing by halves: the clubs are enormous, the drag productions are theatrical, and the night does not really start until midnight. The bar scene clusters on and around Rua Frei Caneca, the historic crowd holds the old centre at Largo do Arouche, and the megaclubs sit in their own industrial corners. Brazil has had nationwide marriage equality since 2013, and São Paulo wears it loudly.

Best time to visit
Early June for the Parada do Orgulho is the obvious peak, when several million people fill Avenida Paulista. São Paulo's nights run very late year-round, with clubs barely warming up before 1am. The city has no real off-season, though winter, June to August, is mild and dry.
Where to stay
Stay in Consolação or near Avenida Paulista to walk to Rua Frei Caneca and the heart of the scene. Both are central, well connected by Metro, and put the Pride route on your doorstep.
Getting around
São Paulo is enormous, but its Metro is fast, clean, and reaches the key areas, including Consolação for Frei Caneca and República for Largo do Arouche. Late at night, rideshare apps are cheap and the safe way to reach the scattered megaclubs.
Good to know
Brazil has had nationwide marriage equality since 2013, and São Paulo is one of the most openly LGBTQ+ cities in the world. Nights here genuinely run late, often to sunrise. As in any big city, keep an eye on your phone and stick to busy, well-lit streets at night.
