The scene

Melbourneat a glance.

Melbourne's gay scene has quietly relocated. For decades it centred on Commercial Road in the south, but the heart of queer Melbourne is now the inner north, around Smith Street where Collingwood meets Fitzroy. It is less a single strip than a cluster of bars, clubs, and a famous leather pub, anchored by Australia's longest-running gay-owned venue. Every January and February, the city throws Midsumma, one of the great queer festivals of the southern hemisphere.

What defines gay Melbourne is the inner north and Midsumma. The scene around Collingwood and Fitzroy is creative, mixed, and a little grungy, exactly like the neighbourhoods themselves: a dance club, drag cabarets, and The Laird, a leather pub running since 1980. The wider scene reaches into Richmond and the once-central south. Australia legalised same-sex marriage in 2017, and the Midsumma Festival fills three summer weeks with more than 250 events.
