MadridSpain
Chueca, one of the world's great gayborhoods, and the biggest Pride in Europe.
Madridat a glance.
Madrid's gay scene has one overwhelming centre: Chueca. The neighbourhood went from rough and run-down in the 1980s to one of the most famous gayborhoods on earth, a tight grid of squares and narrow streets where the bars, the drag stages, and the rainbow crowd are simply everywhere. Madrid Pride, centred on Chueca, is the largest in Europe, and the adjacent Malasaña adds a younger, alternative edge.
What sets Madrid apart is intensity and confidence. Chueca is small, walkable, and almost entirely queer-owned and queer-facing, from continuous drag stages to bear bars to clubs that run until six in the morning. Spain legalised same-sex marriage in 2005, early and decisively, and Madrid threw WorldPride in 2017. Every July the city hosts the biggest Pride in Europe, and the rest of the year Chueca barely slows down.

One of the most famous gayborhoods in the world, and the heart of gay Madrid. A compact grid of squares and narrow streets, almost entirely queer-facing, where continuous drag stages, bear bars, late-night clubs, and pavement terraces sit within a few blocks of each other.

Know before you go.
Best time to visit
Early July for Orgullo Madrid is the obvious peak, when the biggest Pride in Europe takes over Chueca for ten days. Madrid summers are very hot and dry; spring and autumn are more comfortable. Chueca, though, is busy every night of the year.
Where to stay
Stay in Chueca itself to be inside the scene, or in adjacent Malasaña for a slightly quieter, more bohemian base a few minutes' walk away. Both are central and superbly connected by Metro.
Getting around
Chueca is tiny and entirely walkable, with its own Metro station on Plaza de Chueca. The Metro covers the rest of Madrid quickly and runs late, and the city itself eats and goes out far later than most of Europe.
Good to know
Spain legalised same-sex marriage in 2005, among the first countries to do so, and Madrid is one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly cities in the world. Chueca bars rarely charge entry; clubs do. The Madrid night starts late, with bars filling after midnight and clubs running until dawn.
