The scene

Chicagoat a glance.

Chicago does gay nightlife the way it does everything: big, unpretentious, and built to last. Northalsted, long known as Boystown, was one of the first officially recognized gay districts in the country, and its rainbow-pylon strip still anchors the scene. Andersonville on the far north side carries the neighborhood energy, and a leather corner up in Rogers Park runs latest of all. The winters are brutal and the scene does not care.

What stands out in Chicago is the range packed onto one transit line. The Red Line runs straight up the city's spine, linking the Boystown strip, the Andersonville bars and restaurants, and the far-north leather bars in a single ride. Summer is the city showing off, with Pride, Pride Fest, and the enormous Northalsted Market Days. The rest of the year, the bars simply stay warm and stay open.

Gayborhoods

Know the neighborhoods.

Every city has its own geography. Here is where the scene actually lives in Chicago.

  • Northalsted (Boystown)

North Halsted Street, Belmont to Addison, in Lakeview

Chicago's gay strip, and one of the first officially recognized gay districts in the United States, marked by the rainbow pylons of the Legacy Walk. More than a dozen bars and clubs pack a walkable run of North Halsted, the crowd is high-energy, and the scene powers through brutal Chicago winters without blinking.

    • Sports bars
    • Leather bars
  • Andersonville

North Clark Street, on the far north side

North of Boystown, Andersonville is the neighborhood scene: lower-key, more local, historically lesbian-forward, and paired with one of the best independent restaurant strips in the city. The bars here feel more like living rooms than nightclubs.

  • Edgewater & Rogers Park

North Clark Street and Granville Avenue

The far north side holds Chicago's leather and late-night corner: a cluster of unpretentious cruise and leather bars that run latest of all, well past when Boystown winds down. Dim, gear-friendly, and proudly old-school.

Events & Pride

The calendar.

Plan your year around Chicago’s biggest LGBTQ+ events.

  1. Late June 2026 (Sunday, June 28)

    Chicago Pride Parade

One of the largest Pride parades in the country, winding through Lakeview and Uptown and drawing crowds in the hundreds of thousands. The 2026 theme is Free to Be Proud.

  2. Mid-June 2026 (June 20 to 21)

    Chicago Pride Fest

The street festival on North Halsted the weekend before the parade, with live music across multiple stages, vendors, and the bars spilling onto the strip.

  3. Memorial Day weekend, late May

    International Mr. Leather

IML is one of the largest leather events in the world, drawing thousands to Chicago every Memorial Day weekend for the title contest, the leather market, and a packed run of parties.

  4. Early August 2026 (August 7 to 9)

    Northalsted Market Days

One of the largest street festivals in the Midwest: two miles of North Halsted shut down for music, drag, vendors, and a full weekend of circuit-style parties.

Plan your visit

Know before you go.

Best time to visit

Summer is when Chicago shows off: late June for the Pride Parade and Pride Fest, early August for the giant Northalsted Market Days, and Memorial Day weekend for International Mr. Leather. Winters are genuinely harsh, but the bars stay packed regardless.

Where to stay

Stay in Lakeview to walk the Northalsted strip and roll home from the bars. Andersonville suits a quieter, more residential trip with great food. Both sit on the Red Line, so wherever you base yourself, the rest of the scene is a short train ride away.

Getting around

The Red Line is the spine of gay Chicago, running straight from Lakeview up through Uptown and Andersonville to Rogers Park. Within Northalsted everything is walkable. Late at night, rideshare covers the gaps between neighborhoods.

Good to know

Northalsted bars rarely charge cover, while clubs and Market Days events ticket ahead. The far-north leather bars run latest, well past 2am. Chicago has strong LGBTQ+ protections, and the cold is real, so dress for the walk between bars.

FAQ

Common questions.

Where is the gay scene in Chicago?
Northalsted, long known as Boystown, is the main gay district: a dense strip of bars and clubs on North Halsted Street between Belmont and Addison in Lakeview, marked by rainbow pylons. Andersonville on the far north side has the neighborhood-bar scene, and Rogers Park holds a cluster of leather bars.
What are the best gay bars in Chicago?
In Northalsted, Sidetrack, Roscoe's Tavern, Hydrate, Progress Bar, The North End, and Cell Block are the staples, with Charlie's for country-western nights. Andersonville has Atmosphere, Meeting House Tavern, and The SoFo Tap. The leather bars Touche and Jackhammer anchor Rogers Park.
When is Chicago Pride 2026?
The Chicago Pride Parade is Sunday, June 28, 2026, one of the largest in the country. Chicago Pride Fest, the street festival on Halsted, runs the weekend before, June 20 to 21. Northalsted Market Days, a massive August street party, follows on August 7 to 9.
What is Boystown, and is it still called that?
Boystown is the longtime nickname for the gay district along North Halsted in Lakeview, one of the first such districts officially recognized in the US. The neighborhood's business group rebranded it Northalsted in 2020, though locals still use both names.
Is Chicago LGBTQ+ friendly?
Very. Chicago is the most LGBTQ+ friendly city in the Midwest, with strong legal protections, an officially recognized gay neighborhood, and an active community year-round. It also hosts International Mr. Leather, one of the world's biggest leather events, every Memorial Day weekend.
What is the gay scene like outside Boystown?
Andersonville is the second hub: more neighborhood than nightlife district, historically lesbian-forward, with bars like Atmosphere and The SoFo Tap and a great restaurant strip. Further north, Rogers Park has Chicago's leather bars, Touche and Jackhammer, which run the latest hours in the city.
