The scene

Amsterdamat a glance.

Amsterdam wrote part of the rulebook: the Netherlands was the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage, back in 2001. The city's gay scene is woven through the canal-ring centre, from the trendy bars of Reguliersdwarsstraat to the leather venues of Warmoesstraat to the old-school camp bars by the Amstel. In 2026 the city goes even bigger, hosting WorldPride and its famous Canal Parade.

What makes gay Amsterdam distinctive is how relaxed and woven-in it is. There is no single strip so much as a set of clusters across the compact old centre: Reguliersdwarsstraat for the modern crowd, Warmoesstraat for leather and late nights, the Amstel for traditional Dutch sing-along bars. The city is famously easygoing, the canals make it beautiful, and in the summer of 2026 it hosts WorldPride, with eighty decorated boats sailing the canals on August 1.

Every city has its own geography. Here is where the scene actually lives in Amsterdam.

  • Reguliersdwarsstraat

    The canal-ring centre, near Rembrandtplein

Amsterdam's most famous gay street and its trendiest, a single block where bars open their facades onto the pavement in summer. The modern, dressed-up crowd, drag shows, and dancing until the early hours.

  • Warmoesstraat & Zeedijk

The old centre, by the Red Light District

The late-night, leather, and cruise side of gay Amsterdam, on Warmoesstraat near the Red Light District, alongside the historic Zeedijk. Cruise clubs, men-only bars, and one of the oldest gay bars in the world.

  • Amstel & Rembrandtplein

Along the Amstel river, by Rembrandtplein

The traditional, old-school side of the scene, around the Amstel river and Rembrandtplein. This is the home of the classic Dutch gay bars, brown cafes and sing-along spots, camp, warm, and gloriously unpretentious.

Events & Pride

The calendar.

Plan your year around Amsterdam’s biggest LGBTQ+ events.

  1. July

    Milkshake Festival

A famously pansexual, anything-goes summer music festival in Amsterdam's Westerpark, a riot of costume and dance that has become a fixture of the city's queer calendar.

  2. Late July to early August 2026 (July 25 to August 8)

    WorldPride Amsterdam

Amsterdam hosts WorldPride in 2026, two weeks of events, protest, art, and parties, the largest single LGBTQ+ event in the world that year.

  3. Early August 2026 (Saturday, August 1)

    Canal Parade

Amsterdam's signature Pride event: more than eighty decorated boats sail the historic canals while the whole city watches from the banks. Unlike any other Pride parade on earth.

Know before you go.

Best time to visit

The summer of 2026 is extraordinary, with Amsterdam hosting WorldPride from late July into August and the Canal Parade on August 1. Book lodging far ahead for that fortnight. Beyond it, the city is mild and lovely from late spring to early autumn.

Where to stay

Stay anywhere in the canal-ring centre and you are within walking distance of the whole scene. Near Reguliersdwarsstraat puts you on the trendy strip; the old centre near Warmoesstraat suits a later, leather-leaning trip.

Getting around

Central Amsterdam is small and made for walking or cycling, and all three gay areas are within a short stroll of each other. Trams cover the rest of the city, and you will rarely need anything else.

Good to know

The Netherlands was the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage, in 2001, and Amsterdam is famously relaxed and welcoming. Most bars are free to enter; clubs charge. Note that some venues close early in the week, so check ahead.

What are the best gay bars in Amsterdam?
On Reguliersdwarsstraat, Club NYX, Bar Blend, Blend XL, and Taboo Bar lead the strip, with Prik a cultured cocktail bar nearby. On Warmoesstraat, the Eagle and Dirty Dicks handle leather and cruise, and Café 't Mandje on the Zeedijk is one of the oldest gay bars in the world.
